Binaural Recreation ( Bar + Cinema)

Year: 2019
Project Title : Binaural Recreation ( Bar + Cinema)
Project Description : From the first step entering into the space, occupants are invigorated with the sound of the cinematic experience through the speakers which surround the entrance. The St James theatre once the centre of cinematic and theatrical events, is restored to a new glory. A vibrant relaxation area to the right, makes way for the conversation to flow as well as the drinks. The public is free to occupy the space as they please. At the end of the space is a bar which is more dim and subdued in comparison with the rest of the capacity to give ambience and a mature perception of the intervention. Strikingly the cinema space is an intimate area created to block off the chatter and socialising which surrounds. It will display movies and television programs that have been recorded through binaural sound (3d sound) giving users a new experience without even leaving their seats. Sheer, soft curtains surround both the entrance and the theatre space to advance the sense of touch to indicate that a calm reality is about to enter.  Director Damien Chazelles’ work was highly influential when creating a colour palette within the space. The use of unusual contrasting colours alongside lighting to assist in ascending the design helped to elevate it to a new unknown. As a result, the fluidity of the space was taken into account with inspiration from the costuming used in Chazelle’s work that transcended into every scene. Enclosed by the rush of the city, people are looking for an easy escape from their normal life. This intervention delivers two of the most popular activities which adults take part in to unwind. It encompasses what the space used to be which was a place of social gathering and cinematic viewing and elevates these features to the modern demographic.
